Skopje, North Macedonia

ITA|ENG

In less than two hours from Milan, a short flight connects Italy to Skopje, an incredible city full of culture, monumental buildings, and imposing statues… with over 84 in the historic center alone, some of which reach up to 15 meters in height, Skopje is a true treasure trove of art and history.

*History and Culture*

Skopje was largely rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1963, but this has not erased its rich history and culture. The city offers many tourist attractions, including the Medieval-Byzantine Fortress, the Stone Bridge built by the conqueror Mehmed II, the Grand Bazaar full of wonderful objects, and dozens of mosques, including the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Skopje is also the birthplace of Mother Teresa.

*Food and Drink*

The city offers a wide range of culinary options, with delicious dishes such as tomato salad, onion, and sheep’s milk cheese, accompanied by the national distillate, Rakija, and local beer. Local restaurants are open from late morning to evening without a break, offering visitors the opportunity to taste Macedonian cuisine at any time of day.

*A Unique Mixology Experience*

During my stay, I had the opportunity to visit the Jazzbina Bar, a wonderful speakeasy that is a paradise for jazz lovers and connoisseurs of fine drinks. The bar is managed by Vanja Golovski, a great bartender and long-time friend, who hosted and accompanied me throughout my trip. The bar is strategically located, serving unique recipes that delight its customers, who lose track of time in the pleasant atmosphere of Jazzbina.

*A Trip to the Mountain*

One of the most emotional experiences of my stay was the trip to the mountain overlooking Skopje, where I was able to admire the Millennium Cross, a 66-meter-high structure illuminated at night. The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking and offers a unique perspective on the city.

*A Trip Not to Be Missed*

Salute!
